How does yes or no tarot work?

Yes or no tarot is the simplest tarot reading: one question and a single card. It uses the 22 Major Arcana, the most powerful cards in the deck, because each one gives a clear answer.

Think of something that can be answered with yes or no, focus for a few seconds and pick the card that calls you. Each card says yes, no or maybe, and explains why.

What each card answers

  • 0 · The FoolYes!The Fool is a joyful leap into the unknown. Your question asks you to dare: if you do it with an open heart, the answer is yes.
  • I · The MagicianYes!The Magician says you already have everything you need to make it happen. A clear yes, as long as you take the first step.
  • II · The High PriestessMaybeThe High Priestess keeps a secret: something is still unknown. Listen to your intuition and wait a little before deciding.
  • III · The EmpressYes!The Empress brings abundance, love and things that blossom. What you wish for has fertile ground to grow: yes.
  • IV · The EmperorYes!The Emperor speaks of order, strength and control. If you act decisively and with a good plan, the answer is yes.
  • V · The HierophantYes!The Hierophant blesses what is done the right way. Ask someone wiser for advice and you will see it is a yes.
  • VI · The LoversYes!The Lovers speak of union and choosing with your heart. There is a real connection: the answer is yes.
  • VII · The ChariotYes!The Chariot moves at full speed. A yes that comes soon, if you stay on course and don't get distracted.
  • VIII · StrengthYes!Strength wins with calm, not with haste. You have the courage it takes: the answer is yes.
  • IX · The HermitMaybeThe Hermit withdraws to reflect. It isn't the right moment yet: give it time and the answer will become clear.
  • X · Wheel of FortuneYes!The Wheel of Fortune turns in your favour. A change of luck is coming and it pushes you towards yes.
  • XI · JusticeMaybeJustice weighs both sides. You will receive what is fair: it depends on what you have sown. Maybe.
  • XII · The Hanged ManMaybeThe Hanged Man sees everything upside down. Things are on hold: change your point of view before expecting a yes.
  • XIII · DeathNoDeath is not bad, but it closes a chapter. What you are asking about ends as you know it: the answer is no.
  • XIV · TemperanceYes!Temperance blends things patiently until they are just right. A calm yes that comes with balance.
  • XV · The DevilNoThe Devil warns of ties, temptation and deceit. What you are asking about is not good for you right now: no.
  • XVI · The TowerNoThe Tower collapses all at once. Something can't hold and is about to fall: the answer is no.
  • XVII · The StarYes!The Star brings hope and a path that opens up. Your question shows good signs: yes.
  • XVIII · The MoonNoThe Moon hides things in the shadows. There are doubts, fears or something you can't see clearly: for now, no.
  • XIX · The SunYes!The Sun is the brightest card in the tarot: success, joy and things coming to light. Yes, without a doubt.
  • XX · JudgementYes!Judgement is an awakening and a second chance. What seemed lost comes back: the answer is yes.
  • XXI · The WorldYes!The World is the happy-ending card: everything falls into place and the cycle is complete. A resounding yes.

Tips for asking better questions

  • Ask one question at a time and make it specific: “Will he call me this week?” works better than “What will happen with love?”.
  • Ask about yourself and what you can change, not about what someone else will do.
  • If you get “maybe”, don't repeat the same question straight away: it's a sign that something still has to be decided.
  • Take it as advice, not as a verdict: you always have the last word.
